Long reading table with labelled record folders

RECORDS CURATION · PENANG, MALAYSIA

Every household holds a record worth keeping.

Provenance is a quiet, organisational programme for households in Malaysia who wish to bring order to their papers and log a coherent account of their family heritage. The work is curatorial throughout — we note where documents live, who manages them, and which channels can be consulted for further reading. No document is interpreted; no professional counsel is offered. What remains at the close of each session is a clearer, more navigable household archive.

WHAT THE PROGRAMME OFFERS

A household record that echoes across generations.

Structured Organisation

Each session produces a clear, labelled record of where household papers sit — no more searching through drawers at short notice.

Heritage Continuity

The heritage catalogue gives the household a written account of family lineage and notable records — a reference that can be passed along intact.

Non-Advisory Scope

The work is explicitly curatorial. No document is interpreted, no professional advice is given, and the household retains full control over all papers.

Calm, Paced Sessions

Sessions are scheduled at the household's convenience and proceed without pressure. The pace is set by the family, not by a deadline.

Clear Reference Points

Each programme notes which official channels and registries can be consulted for further reading — giving the household a map, not a shortcut.

Household-Wide Clarity

The records inventory names who in the family manages each category of paper — so every member knows their role in the household archive.

FREQUENTLY NOTED QUESTIONS

Questions about the programme

What exactly does a session involve?

A session is a facilitated, in-person meeting during which the household reviews and notes where its papers are held, who manages them, and which official channels exist for further reference. No document is interpreted and no advice of a professional nature is given. The output is organisational: a labelled inventory or catalogue, depending on the programme chosen.

Does Provenance handle or retain any of my documents?

No. All original documents remain in the household's possession throughout the sessions. Provenance does not hold, copy, scan, or retain any household papers. The records inventory and heritage catalogue produced are notes created collaboratively with the household — they belong to the household entirely.

Where do the sessions take place?

Sessions are conducted at the household's premises in Penang. For households located outside the immediate Penang area, please enquire directly so we can note your location and discuss a suitable arrangement.

How long is the gap between sessions in the four-session programme?

The four sessions are spaced across two months, with sessions typically two to three weeks apart. This pacing allows the household time to gather papers, note any gaps, and return to subsequent sessions with a clearer picture of what has been found and what remains to be located.

What is the heritage catalogue?

The heritage catalogue is a written, structured document that records the family's lineage, notable dates, and references to significant household papers across generations. It is curatorial in nature — a log and a record — and is not a legal, genealogical, or professional document of any kind.

What languages are the sessions conducted in?

Sessions are conducted in English. If the household prefers to note particular records in Bahasa Malaysia, that is accommodated within the inventory and catalogue. Please mention any language preference when making your initial enquiry.

How is payment structured for the Annual Library Programme?

The Annual Library Programme at RM 4,580 may be settled in full at the outset or in two equal instalments — the first at the setup session and the second at the second quarterly check-in. Payment methods and schedules are confirmed in writing prior to the commencement of the programme.
